Emmanuel's Visit Day 7

5:20 AM: We had to wake up really early that morning because Emmanuel's flight left at 8:00 that morning, and we needed to be there an hour early, eaten and packed. When we got to the airport, there were still a few minutes left before Emmanuel had to go through customs, which would be the last time we would see him. When it came that time, all of the bitter goodbyes and thank-yous reminded me of something I didn't need to think about in that time of sadness. I realized that I would be standing in this same spot early the next morning to pick up my mom from the airport. Two of the people that matter most in my life, my mom and Emmanuel, would miss meeting each other by less than 24 hours.

Emmanuel's Visit Day 6

6:00 AM: Both my dad and I woke up startled to Emmanuel poking us, whispering for us to get up. Emmanuel had never gotten up this early since he had been here, and plus what could have driven him to wake us up out of a deep sleep? When asked why he woke us up, but not in a mean tone, he told us that he was itching to go into the ocean again. We groaned and asked him if it would be long enough to do it before church, which started at 10:00. He said that would definitely be enough time, all he wanted to do is go for a quick swim. We reluctantly agreed and got in our swim trunks, which were still a little bit wet from yesterdays excursion. We walked down to the thousand steps near our house, and jumped in the ocean for a quick swim. As we were drying off, I noticed that Emmanuel had brought a glass jar to the beach and was filling it with sand, shells, and water. When I asked what he was doing, he replied in a sad voice that he was keeping a mini-beach for himself so that he will always remember us and the ocean. I thought that was a very thoughtful thing to do, he could have just bought a mini fridge magnet that said Santa Barbara, but he made something that would really have him remember all of the good times he had here.

10:00 AM: After a leisurely breakfast, we got in the car and drove to church. After the services, Emmanuel couldn't wait to get out of there. I knew it was risky brining him to church, but I had to give it a try. Next on our agenda was a hike to Lizard's Mouth. We got out of the car and walked the quarter-mile to the rocks, where we would start out Lizards Mouth picnic adventure. The next two hours were a blur of  laughter, tears when you just missed a jump from rock to rock, and good memories. We eventually ended up at a great lookout spot where you could see almost all of Goleta. We had our picnic there, all the while staring out at the vast ocean looming in the distance. But all good things come to an end, and eventually we had to pack up and go.

4:00 PM: The next hour or so was devoted to journal writing, at least for me. We were on our second to last day with Emmanuel, and I hadn't even started writing in my journal. So just as I was finishing a paragraph about Holdren's Stake, I saw that Emmanuel had started to pack up his bags. It was a bitter reminder that our time together was almost done, and I started wondering why he had to go so soon anyways. He had never told me, but I always know there was a reason he couldn't stay longer. Turns out I would never find out.

7:00 PM: I asked Emmanuel if there was somewhere he had seen over the past six days that he wanted to go for dinner. He told me that he had loved all of the restaurants that he had been to, but he had picked my dads home cooking over all of them. My dad seemed overjoyed to cook for our guest after that remark, and we had a nice dinner of Beer Butt Chicken. We went to sleep that night without a inkling of a thought in our minds about the departure the next morning.

Emmanuel's Visit Day 5

8:30 AM: Same as every morning, Emmanuel dragged himself away from the warmth of his sheets and got into some clothes. I decided to take him to the Mustang Waterslides. I have gone to that waterpark annually for countless years, and it is always great to go down those two long slides again. It really never gets old for me. Emmanuel had never gone on a waterslide before, so he really didn't know what to expect. I told him that I wasn't going to try to explain it to him, he would just have to see for himself once we got there, but I did tell him that he was going to need swim trunks.

11:30 AM: After a fast breakfast, we headed down to the waterpark. Once Emmanuel caught a glimpse of the towering slides and saw the kids and adults going down them, he started to jump up and down like a little kid, itching to get on the slides. Once we had paid our admission fee, we raced into the park, took off our shoes and grabbed a mat. Since the park had just opened there were no lines for the waterslides, so we hopped right on. I yelled "See you at the bottom!" and Emmanuel disappeared around the first bend. When I met him at the bottom, he had a big, goofy grin on his face and he said that he wanted to do it again. Just by seeing his face, I knew it was going to be a good day.

4:30 PM: We stayed until almost closing time, and Emmanuel never got tired of the big blue slides, but then again I didn't either. The three musketeers headed home buzzing with excitement and stories about our days. When we got home, Emmanuel crashed on the couch and read some of a book that he brought along with him. I could tell why he was tired, after just a few rides he was starting to go on his knees, do 360's and all sorts of wild man things. I crashed too, but I had some mom-assigned homework to do before my mom got home from Paris, so I got started on that instead.

7:30 PM: No one was really in the mood to go out for dinner, so we just stayed at home for the night. It was one of our better nights, because everyone was in good spirits and I got to call my mom again and tell her about our day at the park. Plus, you can't go wrong with pasta and a movie, can you? After watching on of my favorite movies, Wag the Dog, we all hit the sack as early as we could because tomorrow was Sunday, and we were going to take Emmanuel to church. Plus, it was our last full day with Emmanuel and we couldn't waste any time lounging around in the morning.

Emmanuel's Visit Day 4

8:30 AM: Today was a day of rest for the Three Musketeers. I decided to call my mom when I woke up that morning because she was really bummed she wouldn't get to meet Emmanuel because she was in Paris on a business trip. I opened up Skype on my computer and gave her a call, hoping I had caught her before dinner. She picked up, and looked very excited to see me. I introduced her to Emmanuel, and those two got along very well. They chatted for about fifteen minutes until I finally heard Emmanuel say "Goodbye, Ms. Dochterman" I asked Emmanuel what he wanted to do that day, and he he wanted to check out State Street  and see all of the shops. It took him a while to get ready because he was not firing on all cylinders that day, but we finally got in the car and drove to State Street.

12:30 PM: After a few shops, Emmanuel started to fade, so we stopped for some lunch at  The Palace Grill. After lunch, we hit a few more shops and then decided it was time to head home. Emmanuel immediately crashed when we got home, so my dad and I ran some errands and then just went on with our daily lives until dinner.

7:30 PM: Emanuel finally got up at about 5:30, and after he made himself look presentable he joined us in choosing where we were going to go for dinner. I suggested we go to Palazzios, and agreed so off we went. After a nice hearty dinner of lasagna and garlic balls, we headed home to maybe watch some TV (which we hadn't done much of) and head off to bead early because tomorrow we were back on a normal schedule. We drove home, and everyone hit the sack except Emmanuel who said he couldn't quite get to sleep yet because he had taken such a long nap. He told us not to wait for him to get to sleep, so my dad and I closed our eyes and went off into dreamland.

Emmanuel's Visit Day 3

5:30 AM: I know this is always a cruel time to wake someone up, especially for someone who just got in to Santa Barbara two days ago, but we had to get an early start if were going to get an early start on our day. Emmanuel was out like a light, so I had to shake him to even bring back into this earth, but I eventually got him up. He took a quick shower and, as my dad called our little group, the Three Musketeers hit the road on empty stomachs. The funny part about this is Emmanuel still didn't know where we were going. I told him that we were going to keep it a surprise until we
got there, but he might recognize the place once we arrived. To clarify for you readers, we were going to LA and we were going to spend a day there, and Emmanuel had connected through LAX to get to Santa Barbara.

7:30 AM:  We stopped in the outskirts of LA and had some breakfast. It wasn't anything special, we just needed to get on the road. We arrived at our first destination at about 8:00 and Emmanuel was itching to get out of the car. We were at the Santa Monica Pier, and Emmanuel got into his swimtrunks in record and raced down to the water. After a quick swim, we got into dry clothes and headed to the pier. Somehow Emmanuel was still hungry after our breakfast, so we stopped at the first food vendor we saw, which was a fruit stand. Emmanuel recognized most of the fruits, but he picked out a kiwi and asked me what it was. I told him that was a kiwi, and it is native in Australia. He said he had never felt anything like it before, so we bought the kiwi and started to head onto the pier. When I looked over at Emmanuel, he was biting into the skin of the kiwi! Before he swallowed it I told him to spit it out, and then preceded to tell him to peel of the skin before you eat the kiwi. After that lesson was learned, we headed on to the pier.

1:30 PM: We were done with the pier and heading out to the car when I got an idea of where we should go for lunch. I told Emmanuel that we were going to one of my favorite Ethiopian restaurants, Nyala Ethopian Restaurant. When we got there, Emmanuel ordered the meat dish with beef, and I just shared his because they are such large portions.

3:30 PM: When we were done, we decided to go to a play at The Ahmanson Theatre. They were showing Wicked at 4:30 that day, so we decided to go. We bought out tickets at an internet cafe, changed our clothes in their bathroom (we had brought an extra set of clothes just in case), and we got in the car to go to Wicked. Emmanuel enjoyed the play, but he thought it was very sad, and it turns out he enjoys comedies more than tragedies.

7:30 PM: Our day in LA was about done. We got in out car, and after a little dessert, it was time to head home. Emmanuel was very tired from our early start and the whole day in LA in general, so I decided to give him a day of rest the next day. But by the time I had figured out that he might need a non-active day, he was already conked out in the backseat with me.

10:00 PM: When we got home, we literally carried a sleeping Emmanuel to his makeshift bedroom in our office and put him in bed, clothes and all. Then it was time for me and my dad to go to sleep. We we brushed our teeth, not really making an effort to clean our teeth, just going through the motions. Then we both dropped into our beds and we were asleep before our heads hit the pillow.

Emmanuel's Visit Day 2

8:00 AM: Emmanuel dragged himself out of bed wearing only his underwear and went straight to the bathroom to take a shower. Once he got out, he asked me where we were going for breakfast. I told him I had decided to take him to Anna's Bakery, because every time I go there, I get hypnotized by the amazing smells that are coming from the donuts and other pastries. After hearing that, Emmanuel was ready to go in record time. My dad got the car ready and we drove to Goleta. Upon arrival, Emmanuel walked into the store as fast as possible without it looking suspicious. I guess he was hungry! He ordered 2 donuts, one maple log and one chocolate log, a large cup of coffee, and a english muffin with cheese, ham and green peppers. I asked him if was going to be able to eat that much, and he said he would manage. Well he sure did, and he wolfed it down in record time too.

10:00 AM: When we got home from breakfast, I told Emmanuel I was going to take him boogie boarding. He looked confused, and I didn't understand why until I realized he probably didn't know what boogie boarding was. I told him it was like surfing, only the board was shorter and you didn't stand up. He asked me where we were going to boogie board and I said I would take him to Campus Point, which is a good place for beginners. When we got there, Emmanuel got into his wetsuit and reluctantly got into the water with his boogie board.

2:00 PM: Turns out, Emmanuel was a natural at boogie boarding and he was soon catching waves without difficulty! He was having so much fun, that we stayed in the water a lot longer than we intended to, and when we got out, it was already 2:00! We dried off and got back in the car, and headed home. Emmanuel was really excited about boogie boarding and chatted the whole way home about how he caught a certain wave or how big the waves were at one point, until suddenly he got really tired and said he was going to take a quick nap. He headed off to his room and went to sleep.

3:00 PM: Emmanuel wakes up, and we head off to the bowling alley on a spontaneous decision by me. We arrive at Zodos about 15 minutes later, we rent out shoes and get started on our hour of bowling.

4:00 PM We finished up bowling an hour later. Emmanuel liked bowling, but he was having some difficulties at first because he didn't have the bumpers up, but then he finally gave in and admitted that he needed the bumpers, and he did much better after that. We headed home, and then we both showered and got dressed for dinner. We had a few minutes, and so I decided to try to teach him how to play chess. He didn't do very well because he had a hard time wrapping his mind around it and so I beat him pretty handily, but he was a good sport and accepted his loss graciously. After that, it was time for dinner.

5:30 PM: For dinner that night, we went to Ca'darios to give him a taste of Italian food. He ordered a big plate of lasagna with a side of garlic balls, which was a very good choice. He wolfed down his dinner (I guess he was pretty hungry because of all that boogie boarding we did), but we stayed there and talked for a while, until we both decided we needed to go to bed pretty early that night so we headed home.

8:00 PM: Once we got home, we had a bit of dessert and then we both hit the sack, because I had an early morning planned for us the next morning. The sleep we got was much-needed and very deep, and we were ready to face the next morning.

Emmanuel's Visit Day 1

6:20 AM:  Emmanuel finally arrived! I had been waiting for two weeks in anticipation for him to come. We waited for a ridiculous amount of time for his luggage to appear in Baggage Claim, which turned out to be only one tiny bag with clothes in it. We got a taxi and drove from Santa Barbara Airport to my house on the Mesa. When I asked him what he wanted to do today, he said he would leave it up to me and my good judgement.

8:30 AM: We went and had a quick breakfast at Starbucks. Emmanuel ordered a ham and cheese croissant, which I have to say is a very good choice. After breakfast, we got in the car and went to the head of the Jesusita Trail, which I figured would be a good hike to do because it is not too long and it has a great view of Santa Barbara. I knew he would be pretty tired from his 2 and a half days or traveling, so I picked a hike where we could stop whenever he needed to. Emmanuel was very excited to do this hike because he had never done anything like it before. He was very interested in the flowers and all of their different colors, which surprised me, because I figured he would want to do the hike and get to see the view as fast as possible.

11:30 AM: We finished our hike at Inspiration Point, where my dad came and picked us up. Emmanuel really enjoyed the hike, and he said he would definitely do it again if he had the chance. We were both very dirty and sweaty, because it was a very hot day outside, so we decided to go back to my house and take showers. Emmanuel went first, so when I came out of the shower, I saw Emmanuel on my iTunes looking through all of my songs! I asked him what type of music he liked, and he said he was just listening to Lil Wayne and he really liked him, but he asked why there was a lot of parts when they randomly skipped a word. I laughed and told him that they were just skipping over cuss words, and they have to do that, it's not by choice. He looked confused, but he didn't ask anymore questions about it.

5:30 PM: Emmanuel siad very politely that this was about the time that he ate in Ghana, so I asked him what he wanted to eat, and like this morning, he said he would leave it up to me. So I decided to take him to Holdren's Stakes and Seafood, because I wanted him to try an American favorite, skirt steak. I've loved skirt steak since I was a kid, when my friend Jen made some of the best skirt steak possibly on the planet. It's a bit expensive, but I decided to splurge since Emmanuel was here. When we got there, I told Emmanuel that I recommended the skirt steak and he tried it with a willing attitude. He loved the steak, but I don't think he liked the fries very much, because he offered them to me!

7:30 PM: After a dinner made up of skirt steak, good cheer and funny conversations, it was time to head home. Emmanuel was feeling a little jet lagged so we stayed up a little late just talking because he couldn't get to sleep, but he finally fell asleep at about 11:00, and didn't wake up until 8:00 the next morning.
